"A strategy, melee combat game set to blow you away!"
I've only played the 'melee' mode, and likewise with any subsiquent Star Control titles I have laid my hands on, but I can tell you that that tell you enough of what a good game it is!
I've spent hours of my life playing this game just because of its vastness, its colourful graphics and similarly-so characters and pilots.
You play as the do-good human 'allegiance', full of weird droids that look like 80s sci-fi soda bottles, racoon-humans and the famous little green martian in a flying saucer (not to mention a dinosaur-kangaroo who flies a ship not unlike a boomarang).
The alternative is the opposition, the alien 'hierarchy', a weird collection of black spiders, bloated pink guys driving space hoovers, aliens who have stolen a klingon battle cruiser, and a motley crew of insane navy men whose ship blows bubbles and transforms into a meteroite.
Confused? That's the point. Star Control is a great and fun game, full of wonderful sound effects and often fast-paced action. Controls can be tricky, as they are defaulted something like 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, for the aliens, and v, b, n, m,
